There is no waiting out Kim. There is only removing him. Kristof's description is right out of "1984." This guy is not going quietly. You kill authoritarian regimes like Iran and Cuba with connectivity. Totalitarian leaders like Kim you just kill.

I don't understand the distinction. What use to kill Kim if the people still believe? Wouldn't it be more use to flood the place with Chinese cellphones, so people can talk to the outside world?

If you can cajole Kim into the direction of the SK and/or china models and move him away from proliferation and nukes in the korean peninsula you win. Problem is although he may be attempted by the material successes, he would have to know that any liberalization would one day cost him his regime. The good news is that if the people support him in a cult like fashion, maybe just maybe they will buy into Kim as the saviour when things get better at least in the short term even later on it will be too late. Can he be snookered? Perhaps thats the bet the Skoreans and the Chinese are willing to make. From a western perspective it sounds damn silly but what would be a better alternative policy at present. Damned if i know.
