There is more than one perspective on the liberation of Afghanistan from the Russians. Certainly as jttmab and you have pointed out, the Russian rivalry and the need to open the region up to economic development (pipe lines or what ever) were motivating factors.

Personally, I think it is narrow mined to reduce global affairs to anything so simple. There is, or at least should be, in all cases, a combination of noble cause and economic interests that impact our policies and actions as a country, with neither completely trumping the other. It appears that I am guilty of ignoring the latter in my presentation; while you two are guilty of overlooking the former.
