Such conduct is not supportable by a society of conscience, such as the USA is founded upon. Our principles of rights, liberties, and rule of law are the ultimate measure of our behavior.

As I stated regarding the balance of economic interests and noble cause:

"...with neither completely trumping the other."

Your Mayflower allegory carries the ring of truth to it. However, an equal problem is that even when we are acting in good faith, the enemies of the state or political opportunists are apt to demonize us under the Mayflower allegory, whether valid or not.
