I'm not trying to describe a unified field theory of Al Qaeda that can be disbursed in economical sound bites.

I am pointing out that "they hate us for our modernity" as you express it leaves out too much.

Let me turn the tables. How does "they hate us for our modernity" explain attacks on Shias? Are Shias somehow more modern than Sunnis?

Gettting back to the 40k iranain terrorists i suspect a good deal of this is the same propaganda they are using regarding nukes to deter us from any first strike. 20k sounded way high and 40k sounds way higher. They are probably counting hizbolla and hamas here.

Do you have any idea if and when the fundamentalist sunni will fight the fundy shiaa? Given the way they think does that battle automatically come at the end or perhaps there are reasons for Iran to want to help put an end to al quaeda now?
