Closely watched Apple Computer (AAPL) posted another strong quarter, with unit growth of more than 37%. Apple's low-cost iMac Mini and the ongoing appeal of its music businesses, iPod and iTunes, helped its PC business.

Apple appears well positioned for education and consumer PC sales in the second half of the year, IDC says. Apple's worldwide market share inched up to 2.5% last quarter from 2.3% in Q1 and 2.2% a year ago.

In the U.S., Dell is the No. 1 PC seller with a 34.7% market share. HP follows at 18.7%, then Gateway (GTW) at 6% and Apple at 4.5%.

[Dell (DELL) remains the top PC vendor, increasing its global market share to 19.3%, from 18.2% a year ago, IDC says. It increased unit shipments by 23.7% from the year-ago period.

Hewlett-Packard (HPQ) stayed in second place with a market share of 15.6% and unit growth of 16.3%.

Rounding out the top five, in order, are China's Lenovo Group, Acer and Fujitsu/Fujitsu Siemens.]
