The US did not out compete Japan. To some extent, South Korea, Taiwan and later China did.

Japan partially achieved their economic goals of much higher standard of living.

The threw away some capital which seemed almost free on silly construction projects, status buys of 'trophy real estate', impressionist oli paintings, etc.

They did not fix their household crowding / real estate prices problems, which has limited their domestic markets (there's nowhere to put new purchases) and causes demographic problems - kids who are still living with their parents because they can't afford to rent an apartment.

Japan has not become poor and destitute - but the talk about world domination has stopped.

China and India are very different.

India is sort of a collection of countires and peoples flying in formation, and still massive literacy and transportation infrastructure issues.
