Getting back to that nuke Mecca guy, it seems to me that deterrence would work just as well if we dropped giant balloons filled with pigs blood on the holy sites instead of nukes.
Deterrence played a key role in the containment of communism during the cold war--actually mutual deterrence as we were deterred to. If we are fearful of wmd use by al quaeda, set the bar high with something that really matters to them. Whether bin laden really cares about pigs blood or the destruction of a holy city is unknown to me but it is something worth studying. If he can be deterred and wmds can be defined for him, at least we can keep the level of violence under control.
