Cellphone shops and sales techniques are pathetic.

<I wonder how much sales of new phones, PDAs etc are slowed by the bewildering choice that exists. Every so often I think of upgrading my wireless services. Each time I make the best the enemy of the good, and stick with my steam-powered calls only phone.>

I'm sure you are right that the barriers to entry are raised by the merchants.

In Europe, UK, NZ [though I think not in the USA] they hide the phones in glass cases and list a few functions on a piece of paper.

There's not much information and trying them out is hard work - they want people to just point and buy. 3G is evident if one looks for it, but there's not much to tell propective buyers about the benefits.

There are a good proportion of the 3G phones with a QUALCOMM label on them, which is nice to see. But of all the phones on display, only about 5% are QUALCOMM inside. About 10% are 3G [approximate guess]. Maybe it's 20%.

I suspect the rate of 3G adoption will dramatically increase over the next year or two as people get to know about it bit by bit and byte by byte.

I have my old clunker still. It's not that much of a clunker, but it is 3 years old.
