Yep. In Islam it's still like the Middle Ages (remember the massacres of the Hugenots in France?).

Reformation never happened in Islam.

I believe our smartest play would be to stand back and let the two sides of religious extremists 'have at it' (not encourage their fighting, not get involved supporting one over the other... just quietly calling for peace and not arming *either*).

Ultimately both sets of extremists will lose out (and, in the short run, they will be focused on each other, not on us). And Authoritarian governments will collapse on both sides.

We should get the Hell out of the area, and let the region resolve it's conflicts and contradictions itself (in war: since the table is already set in Iraq). As long as we are there, people can always point to us and blame everything on the US, instead of dealing with their own problems and the region's shortcomings.
