Makes sense to me. I played baseball as a kid, and softball as an adult. I played some soccer in school. As a spectator sport, baseball is boring. Softball is fun, and not too demanding athletically. I've always felt soccer was great exercise, with all the running, but it seems sort of stupid. A sport that doesn't allow hominids to use their HANDS!? But you're allowed to use your HEAD? It's as dumb as golf, but better exercise.

Everyone should play tennis.

why not do away with the dirt and make it all grass ?

the base paths (the "corridors" as you called them) will get worn down anyway as players run/walk around them, so there would be ruts in the grass. this would make fielding ground balls much more difficult for the infielders. they go the opposite way in Japan, making the entire infield dirt. this is kind of ugly, though.
