well...

i do not dislike hockey, i do enjoy it...

what puts me off is the extreme violence... partly allowed inherently in the rules themselves... i mean this practice of 'checking' might as well be dubbed trouncing...

in soccer, an equivalent move, (i.e. being worse than tackled -because it is made against the boards) will get you a red card instantaneously and if the tension in the game is high enough, it would start a major fight in defense of the tackled player.... therefore, such practice is stopped immediately and it is seen as a lack of skill...

i think the game of hockey is a very fast and demands tremendous skills from the players...

i simply fail to understand the violence... it kills the game where skill is required...

any orangutan can go and 'check' the next guy or even make the opponent pulp with the right upper cuts, etc etc etc...

if so... quit hockey and get into boxing...

these new sports what do they call them reality cage fighting or whatever...

i mean what the hell is the point? kill your enemy?

thanks but, no thanks...

even boxing or judo, with all the inherent violence, (particularly boxing), there is a skill involved, (i.e. self defense) and the contenders are somehow protected by the use of specific gloves, etc...

how so many fans can love soccer but not love hockey.

Americans are sports-overloaded. hockey is also kind of hard to follow as the puck moves so fast. and, if you grew up in the southern half of the country, you probably don't even know how to skate. seems like a cool sport, though.

It is simple: people tend to follow (and like) those sports they played when they were kids.
And since you couldn't play hockey in most of USA, most people didn't. That's why they don't get it. Same for soccer. It wasn't that popular before so most people don't get the beauty of it. They call it boring because the only thing they can understand is goals. Baseball is much more boring in my mind.
And I think that hockey is most dynamic sport and fun to watch.
