NWA mechanics vote to strike
biz.yahoo.com

Northwest Airlines Corp. mechanics, cleaners and custodians have voted overwhelmingly to approve a strike, union leaders said Tuesday.

More than 92 percent of the Aircraft Mechanics Fraternal Association (AMFA) workers at Eagan-based Northwest authorized the union's national organization to call a strike.

A strike could begin 30 days after the National Mediation Board (NMB) releases Northwest and the union from negotiations. Both sides have requested a release from talks.

On Monday, Northwest rejected binding arbitration with its mechanics. A strike can be called 30 days after the National Mediation and Conciliation Board declares an official impasse in contact talks.

While the board hasn't done that yet, a declaration could come at any time since both the union and Northwest management have separately told it that mediated contract talks are at a standstill.

Northwest said it needs $176 million in annual cost cuts from the mechanics, has failed to win this in the mediated talks, and does not believe it could win it in binding arbitration.

The airline has asked its mechanics to take job and pay cuts as part of its plan to cut $1.1 billion in labor costs. The carrier said it risks a Chapter 11 bankruptcy filing if it can't cut costs to make up for high fuel prices and other expenses.

Northwest has laid off about 700 mechanics in the Twin Cities. The Eagan-based carrier has proposed eliminating 2,031 mechanics, or nearly half of the workforce. The airline has also asked the remaining 2,381 mechanics to take a 26 percent pay cut.

The mechanics have offered to take a 16 percent in base pay in the first year of a two-year contract. The union says the pay cut would save Northwest $143 million, but the airline says the move would only cut $87 million in costs.
