Given the widespread problem of rape and various superstitions about sleeping with children, widows and virgins to cure AIDS in different corners of South Africa, a pro-virginity campaign might not accomplish much. Couldn't hurt though.

I remember in the late 1980's that AIDS was considered a gay disease by blacks. They called it the American Idea to Discourage Sex. Whites thought it was just a black problem.

Then it turned into everybody's problem. I haven't seen any figures but I assume the infection levels stabilized in the white gay community eventually.

Bbaale County MP Sulaiman Madada said any girl in his district who wanted to take part in the scheme aimed at promoting girls' education would be given a gynaecological examination by health workers to check they were virgins.

A gynaecological examination is not conclusive.
