Madness and extremism is at the very pinnacle of what explains their actions.

Conflicts are never resolved while the worldviews of the participants latch onto false stereotypes. Sure it's easier to pull trigger if you envison the target as more hateful than the ordinary human, but such tactic can only win if you can kill to the point of exhausing the enemy. Such tactic is useless when new enemies are created faster than the old ones can be killed.

The U.S. is going to keep losing this war unless or until it begins to treat the people of Iraq like people, and realize that the crimes against civilians are just that, crimes. Personally, I don't think the Bush League has smarts or the empathy to make the leap necessary put the conflict into perspective. It also doesn't have the ethics or courage to face up to the crimes committed in their name too. If this mess ends instead of spreads, it will do so under the watch of better men.
