Turkish PM criticizes BBC, Reuters

ANKARA, Turkey -- Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan has sharply criticized Reuters and the British Broadcasting Corporation.

The Turkish daily Hurriyet reported that Erdogan was upset that the two news organizations referred to the Kurdistan Workers Party, also known by the acronym PKK, as a "militia" rather than a terrorist organization. Erdogan told the media that since the PKK began its armed struggle in 1978 Turkey has lost 40,000 people to terrorism.

"We have been monitoring the recent developments and we have no intention of stepping back," in the fight on terrorism, he said.

On July 17 a bomb exploded on a commuter minibus in the western Turkish Mediterranean resort town of Kusadasi, killing five people, including three Turkish citizens, a British citizen and an Irish national. Twelve other passengers and two pedestrians walking in the vicinity were injured. Turkish security forces are working under the assumption that the PKK was behind the blast. Security focused on trying to determine if the bomb was detonated using a timer or a remote control device.

A provincial official said that the bomb that looked like a TV remote control was placed in a small bag and was apparently lodged between a window and a seat.
