I can value sentience, compassion, and reason without positing any spirit or soul or supernatural explanations. Therefore, for me to posit souls without any rationale would merely be gratuitous. If there is some being who is dependent upon my worship then He had better act in His own self interest. I can tell Him right now, though, that genocide is not an appeal that will work; nor will primitive tales of child sacrifice or stoning people to death for gathering sticks or for having sex; nor am I impressed by bears being sent to massacre children or by flat earth or floods or showing hind parts or foreskins or rabbits that chew their cud or Egyptian magicians creating frogs by waving wands or making people eat dung or by testing fidelity by forcing women to eat offal off the floor to see if it kills them. If my "soul" comes from that sort of a Supreme Being...then He can have it back and stick it where the sun don't shine. In the meantime, I reserve my obedience, my fondness, and my cooperation for my fellow travellers on this ship..and for the ship itself.
