"Liberal" isn't even an accurate word anymore for the vast majority. Centrist-progressives clearly control at last half the Dem party. Plus many democrats are moderate conservatives. Second, the myth that democrats or "liberals" dont care about counter-terrorism, religion, obtrusive government, individual rights (including gun ownership but not ending there) and strong families. All totally false. My family, for instance, includes several devout Christian ministers who are extremely moral, and see Bush's policies as largely immoral, plus several hunters and military veterans. I for one am to the right of Bush on counter-terrorism. I say kill them all, just don't invade whole countries and expect that to fix anything unless that government you toppled is like the Taliban. Third, that democrats or "liberals" are pro abortion, or pro gay marriage or pro illegal immigration. All false. I am against all three. But I do not want to take away a woman's right to make her reproductive or sexual decisions and I believ the rightwing is hypocritical. What they secretly want is to abolish sex because they think it's dirty and shameful. Sex is not dirty or shameful, it's a big part of life and can be a wonderful thing. Yes there are some on the left who proudly call themselves "liberals" in the 70's tradition. Just as there are many on the right who think we never should have ended the Vietnam War, segregation or McCarthyism. But both are minorities who are not in power, though they do help run dirty tricks campaigns for Rove, and some ones on the left backed Nader and foolishly helped Bush grab power in the first place. Bottomline, the rightwing is running against a mythical "liberal" which hardly even exists, "liberals" who might reject even the DEmocratic party, and tries to lump we the majority centrists (including moderates of all stripes) in with them. If you had to break it up, the country is 45% centrists, 30% conservatives and 25% liberals, but those tags are just sweeping generalities and there are millions of exceptions and hybrids within.
