OK, here's what I want you to do. Drive out to a deserted moors area with a deep running channel of water in the dead of night. Put a human-sized doll on the seat next to you. Make sure you have no phone, there are no street lights of any kind nearby and no one around to call for help. Pitch dark except for your headlights. Hit the gas and drive into the deep water. Sink for awhile then scramble out and swim to the surface. Swim to shore. Then collect yourself and dive back into the channel and see how easy it is to rescue the doll within 3-4 minutes, the time it would take someone to die of drowning.

An expert scuba diver type might be able to do it if he were lucky, but remember, zero visibility underwater and a current running.

When I stayed on Chappaquiddick we speculated about what we would have done. We all agreed it was damn stupid to be driving recklessly out there in the dead of night. Other than that, we all understood that rescuing someone from a car under that water would be extremely difficult. We also could plainly see there would be no one around to call for help and no lights to illuminate the location. This was also before cell phones. The nearest phone was a long walk or swim away.

Did Teddy do anything wrong? Sure. Dunking the car in the first place. But once the car was underwater, what could he do? And if you think he did it on purpose, you're nuts. No more than Laura Bush killed her friend on purpose.
