Excellent point - conceptual differences between drastically different cultures have misinformed much of our foreign policy since the US emerged as an active world power. Part of the problem is the emotional objection we have seen to understanding how other peoples think when we don't agree with what they consider noble. Too many people think that countenancing another POV means undermining your own, the proverbial zero-sum game.

Given the numbers involved, western culture will never dominate or eradicate Muslim culture and vice versa. For now, we have limited violent clashes as a result. Eventually it should settle down to more sensible coexistence like most great cultures throughout history.

The harder part will be each culture integrating part of the other, ours through immigration and theirs through globalization.
