Life is often a messy jumble. Conflict still more so. However in war, and to a lesser extent in other forms of conflict, it is often better to do something rather than ponder the ideal solution. I don't think there is a simple clean ideal solution. I do think using military force in places like Afghanistan is part of a reasonable but messy response. Response doesn't mean "solution", even if every single violent radical in and around Afghanistan was dead, or captured, or deterred, or convinced to have a different opinion, we would still fact a terrorist threat, but the fact that the action isn't sufficent to resolve the issue doesn't mean it is a bad idea.
