Thanks for a thoughtful and through post...

>> I don't find "unreasonable" an arrangement between the mother and father...I just find it very unlikely

So do I. I don't think it will make much difference to the society at large one way or the other...nonetheless it remains a big noisy point...

>> of course the father has a "say" about the unborn, the ultimate decision belongs to the woman

<vbg> I thought you would say that (as a woman). I chuck this under I-acknowledge-rights-of-others-only-if-I-don't-give-up-mine. It is a common perspective to our species.

For all the reasons you mentioned, I agree that the woman has much greater say in it than the man. But I am not willing to say she has the only say (which is implied in your statement). In cases of dispute the court should be the arbiter that considers all the points you mentioned...on the other hand, there is something to be said about taking responsibility and putting up with the hang over after a night of partying. I don't believe the whole affair should be reduced to taking two pills in a morning a month later. Interestingly enough, many women feel that if they choose to keep the baby the man has to pay for all the child care and "take responsibility", despite the long term consequences for him (what if he is not at a point in his life that he wants a child? Can he just leave the pills on the table and leave?)

>> In pretty much all developed countries on earth, the legal system recognizes that this decision lies with the woman

This has to do more with history and women's movement than with objective assessment of rights of all parties involved. So this line of reasoning does not hold with me.

>> if the situation was reversed and women asked men to go through nine months of hell to give us a baby...

This is already the case. It is just that long ago we changed the names and called those men "women" :)

>> so many things in life are unfair to women...that I just cannot feel sorry for men...

ya, my mom used to say the same thing too (she probably still does, I just don't bother asking her anymore :)

"In fact, if procreation of the human race depended on men going through the trouble of a nine-month period of pregnancy and then passing a small bowling ball from their tender parts, with a serious likelihood of lasting damage to their precious genitals, I dare say the human race may have died out a long time ago :-)"

You're definitely not painting a pretty picture!

It must be amusing (and unsettling) to hear a bunch of guys debating the ins and outs of the abortion matter. What do people think? That they CAN force someone to treat their body in a certain way? The problem is that I have no doubt there ARE many people who WOULD tie you down and feed you with a plastic spoon. We don't want them gaining momentum!

And it is important for women to speak out. One honest paragraph straight from the shoulder that tells people they can go to Hell when it comes to your body...well THAT is worth more than 9 months of argument over the meaning of DNA! ;-)
