Attacking the US in Iraq is easier for proximity reasons, makes the terrorists look bolder because they are blowing up soldiers, might get the US out of Iraq and weaken them in the region, and it hurts the general US image as the power-that-can't-be-denied.

It would be interesting to see if anyone in DC was making the argument that the post-invasion Iraq scenario could disintegrate into a situation that is just as dangerous if not much more so than the status quo ante.
