Frankly, he's what I expected.......from upstate New York, a very conservative part of that state.

He's actually from Western NY, which is mostly conservative except for Buffalo, which is pretty liberal -- and that's his city.

Buffalo is liberal by upstate NY standards. Its still fairly conservative by national standards. However, it doesn't change the fact that Roberts is a "bedrock" conservative.
