70-80 votes for confirmation. I wrote earlier that someone who knows told me the fix was in. Bush provided a short list to dems and let them choose. Maybe even allowed a veto for one or two potential nominees. Now the dems will stage the fight over the nomination and then vote cloture and vote. Lets remember which dems vote against roberts and get back at them at the polls. Hillary will vote to confirm is my prediction. Future of the party is in the middle/left and not at the extreme. If my friend is right, the more extreme right on this thread will be really pissed off when bush picks Gonzales to replace Renny at the appropriate time. Dems already gave him seal of approval for this seat--now its the wild eyed right who will be tamed. Bush is not an ideologue folks--he is principled and Roberts as the choice shows that but he aint no ideologue and ask HAQ--texans reward their friends. Mike

Brooks indeed has a good column today. I'm copying it below. I think JohnM does not like him because Roberts seems too much like the Beaver's father, not an Eagle Scout:

I frankly don't see what you guys like in this Brooks' column. It's a belaboring of the obvious.

We need columnists who tell us things we don't already know. There are half a dozen folk on this thread who could have written that column.

I like the Beaver's father comment. Hadn't thought of it.
