What made Evert a great player was also what made her boring to watch. Her weapon was making less mistakes than her opponent. This led to incredibly long, fairly boring baseline rallies. I think women's tennis today is much more interesting, with a variety of strategies able to prevail on any given day.

ROBERTS VOWS TO BE MOST GENERIC WHITE MALE IN HISTORY OF SUPREME COURT

Bush Praises Nondescript Nominee John G. Roberts, President Bush’s nominee to replace Justice Sandra Day O’Connor on the United States Supreme Court, made a case for his own nomination today, telling reporters that, if confirmed, he was determined to be “the most generic white male in the history of the Supreme Court.”

With a beaming President Bush at his side, Judge Roberts said that if he serves on the nation’s highest court, “The nondescript American white male, who is woefully underrepresented in this country at present, will finally have a voice.”

Judge Roberts summarized the life experiences that had put him in touch with the needs of the generic white male, including a brief period in the early 1980’s when he modeled generic men’s sportswear for K-Mart, as well as a later stint as a downloadable generic white male icon for ClipArt.

While President Bush praised his nominee for being both “interchangeable” and “unremarkable,” a poll taken just hours after the nomination was announced suggests trouble ahead, with a clear majority of Americans being unable to remember Judge Roberts’ name.

According to the poll, over fifty percent of those surveyed identified Mr. Bush’s nominee as either “Jim Rogers” or “Bob Roberts,” with over seventy percent confusing him with CBS news anchor John Roberts, yet another prominent generic white male.

For his part, President Bush appeared unfazed by such numbers, telling reporters at the White House, “I have total confidence in Don Rogers.”

Elsewhere, over 150,000 women in Great Britain submitted applications to become actor Jude Law’s new nanny.

The Venus Williams' of the world have less of an advantage over us smaller girls on a clay court since the softness of the surface absorbs so much

one of the reasons i don't like women's tennis today is that the big girls have such an advantage. a couple years ago i noticed that the top man (Lleyton Hewitt) was lighter than all the top women (Williams sisters, Davenport, Capriati, maybe his then-girlfriend Clijsters -g-). people like Lindsay Davenport (6'3", 180lb or more) are very exceptional in size for women. i don't know the men's equivalent, but it is probably 6'10", 275lb or something. there's no way somebody that size becomes a top player in men's tennis, because speed and agility overwhelm oafishness.

unfortunately, relative size is much more of an advantage in women's tennis. this drove people like Martina Hingis from the sport. Henin-Hardenne is really exceptional as a near-average-sized woman who has been able to stand up to the oafs. i think this is a mixture of her off-the-charts ability and determination. she is the one exception and the only top woman player i like. i think of her as kind of like those rare ~5'6" NBA players who are freaks of nature in terms of high coordination and agility, instead of just being a freak who is "vertically gifted" i.e. 7 feet+ tall.

i believe relative size is so much more important in the women's game because there is a critical mass of strength necessary to produce the big shots with control (spin) which few women possess physiologically. the women's game could actually be more interesting (more rewarding of skill, less rewarding of oafishness) if they played with much lighter balls. this would allow women to use much lighter rackets, so that they could generate the racket speed needed to create heavy shots (speed with spin). it is the heavy shot which really defines the modern game of men's tennis and makes it such a great game. women skillwise could play this same game given equipment more suited to their strength profiles.

alas, this is just a pipedream because it would not suit the interests of the current oafs and supermodels who receive most of the money in the sport.
