Laura rammed into her boyfriend's car at 50 MPH in broad daylight. She would have known it was his car. No further explanation. She was 17 at the time. The ugly rumor was that he'd dumped her and she was mad at him, but just a rumor.

My whole point in bringing her up was to expose the rightwing demonizing Teddy K for Chappaquiddick but ignoring Republican manslaughter cases. TK did a terrible thing that night but it was an accident. In our society we forgive accidents. I'm sure Laura didn't mean to murder her boyfriend either.

In general, we all do foolish things from time to time, especially when we are young and reckless. GW did plenty. John Kerry was a bit too flamboyant with his "atrocities" speech, though it was aimed squarely at the top brass and WH, not the soldiers. The rightwing lied about that big-time.

On all this stuff, I say "so what"? It was all 40 years ago. If GW were an honest presdient I wouldn't give a damn if he went AWOl and lied about it in his 20's. But when the rightwing attacks Kerry's heroic war record, honesty and courage, then Bush becames very much "fair game".

BTW, if you want to attack war records, look at Bush Sr.'s "heroic" bail out of his plane during WWII. He bailed out leaving his two co-pilots to go down to their deaths. Bush Sr. doesn't like to talk about it. But do we democrats call him a "murderer"? No way. War is hell. Bad stuff happens in war. Hell, our friendly fire kills as many of our troops as the enemy does sometimes. War crimes are only crimes when they're deliberate and malicious.
