The Bay Area definitely had job loss the last five years due to the tech decline. But there is a great deal of industry diversity in the Bay Area, so people were still able to find jobs in other sectors. My brother has an airline leasing company. He said that in the last five years he could hire anybody he wanted, many from the best schools in the US. Also, there is a lot of venture capital in CA which helped mitigate some of the job loss.

The Mid-west, in my opinion, is transforming itself from a manufacturing based economy to a service economy. You can't pay the mortgage working at McDonald's, even if the mortgage isn't that large.

At least that is my take on it.

Chris I'm also hearing a ton of homes for rent outside the loop in Houston. Up to six months free rent on longer term leases in the newest subdivisions the furthest outside Hwy 8. Amazing..
