In the great plains the PO gets fairly good employees. I attribute the phenomenon to wage differential. In this region, wages are relatively lower than PO wages, so there is competition for the scarce jobs, and they hire the best available. In larger markets McDonalds pays about as much, and the attractive feature is you can treat people rudely without repercussion.

That is not to say that PO employees here are not as rude on occasion. I have even wanted to provide additional incentive to recalcitrant employees.
