From the beginning, Al Qaeda's fighters were global jihadists, and their favored battlegrounds have been outside the Middle East: Afghanistan, Bosnia, Chechnya and Kashmir. For them, every conflict is simply a part of the Western encroachment on the Muslim ummah, the worldwide community of believers.
So let's see, some Muslims move to London. That makes the UK part of the ummah and the Westerners (who were there first) are "encroaching". By extension, any place Muslims move to or make converts becomes part of the ummah and everyone else is then an encroacher.

I guess that means we have to fight, doesn't it?

I first heard of this (to me) strange concept in Tunisia. It seems that the Muslims consider N. Africa and the ME "theirs" and everybody else is unwelcome. Now Christians lay claim to some small areas in the ME (such as Jerusalem and Bethlehem), but seem able to tolerate other religions in those areas. Jews have special areas too, but seem willing to put up with Christians and Muslims there. Buddhists, as far as I've ever heard, make no territorial claims.

But the rest of us must give up teritory where there are any Muslims.
