I don't know if it happened or not. One unknown source is not dispositive.

I take your point. I was focused on the coverage, or non-coverage, as it turns out, not the applause.

You'd think, though, that any journalists who offered "thunderous applause" would hasten to report the joyous event. So it seems probable that either it didn't happen or that those doing the applauding weren't American. The coverage of the statement was limited to Indian media. Perhaps it was they who were attending and applauding.
