More about the effect of the system...

When Nikita Khrushchev attacked Stalin at the 20th Party Congress in 1956, someone in the audience sent him a note pointing out that Khrushchev himself was the top aid to Stalin and if he had a problem with him, why didn't he raise it then. Khrushchev read the note outloud to the congress and then asked who wrote it? There was total silence. Again he asked the question. When the silence continued, Khrushchev said, "comrade, I was silent then for the same reason that you are silent now".

After the revolution in Iran, former prime minister Amir Abbas Hoveyda was brought before a revolutionary "court". Journalists were given access to the prisoners. The whole thing was propaganda on how bad the previous regime had been and a reporter asked how is it that Hoveyda implemented "such" policies. Hoveyda recognized the reporter as one of the regulars (read keeners) at past press conferences. He reached out to shake hands with one who used to be very keen at press conferences. The reporter pulled his hand back saying he would never shake hands with such corrupt characters. Hoveyda then nodded and said, "to answer your question, that system demanded a prime minister like me and a journalist like you".

The debates over Bush or Clinton, Dems or Reps, etc are fairly futile so long as the system remains such that politicians remain more loyal to those fund their campaigns than their voters. And all the speeches on America's founding principles will ring hollow so long as our "elected" officials can sanction the most inhuman acts or dictators without any meaningful repercussions at home.

If you want to serve America, change the system not its president.
