Great -- lets see how the UK does or does not compare. Japan's experience provides very little guidance I am afraid because of the radically different circumstance.

Here is some info on the U.K. employment situation:

U.K. Unemployment:

The Office for National Statistics said claimant count unemployment rose by 8,800 after a rise of 14,000 in May. That took the jobless rate up to (4.8 SIC) percent as more than 50,000 people have lost their jobs since the start of the year.

Meanwhile, annual average earnings growth slowed more than expected in the three months to May -- to a rate of just 4.1 percent -- the weakest since last October -- from 4.6 percent in the prior period.

Public sector employment:

"As expected the ONS figures confirm that more than half a million extra jobs have been created in the public sector since Gordon Brown became Chancellor of the Exchequer, which has seen public sector employment rise by 11% to 5.74 million. Moreover, had the ONS been able to extend its data series to the final quarter of 2004 it is likely that the total rise would have been closer to 0.7 million.
