I had a check up about 8 years ago. The results showed that I had a low level of thyroxin in my blood, and low blood pressure.

The doctor prescribed thyroxin suppliments and something for my heart.

So I down loaded some documents on the risks...

There was something like a half page for each of warnings like ... sleeplessness, diarhea, constipation, headaches, impotency, paranoia etc etc.

Since a child, I have always been told that I have a very mellow personality, my blood pressure has always been below normal (which is not associated with illness as far as I know).

So it was a tough call: Take the drugs, let my dick drop off and never poop again or ignore the doctors advice.

When I flipped the coin it said to take the drugs. So I threw away the unlucky coin and have not been back to the doctor since.

LOL! I had not read this when I told you talking to nurses (or other doctors for that matter) will push one to stay away.

Aside from the general sentiment in your post, that I agree with, and the fact that almost no medical professional I know of wants to be a patient in his/her hospital (i.e. the close eyes and hold nose solution) here are some of the more colourful horror stories that I know of (only first or second hand stories; i.e. those that I personally know or those that I spoke with someone who personally knew):

One of the residents in Puerto Rico was telling me how one of the doctors made the wrong diagnosis and thought there was tumour in man's penis. He cut it off and as procedure demanded sent it for post-op examination. After slicing the poor thing like cold cuts, they found no justification for the operation. Fearing that the patient would kill his surgeon, the doctor in charge falsified the report.

Another person I know of chose an "experienced" doctor from a major city who was operating in a small so-so suburban hospital. The problem was that the good doctor had developed an alcohol problem (perhaps why he was out of his big practice) and came to the operating room drunk. The results was a total disaster and what should have been a simple operation turned into an 8 week hospital stay. Fearing a law suit, the hospital covered it up. Only after paper work was signed did the truth come out. I've actually seen the butcher marks he left on the patient...this is one reason why I put more emphasis on the hospital than the doctor.

My mom went to her GP with complaints about fever, pain, and breathing. The incompetent idiot assumed she has the same flu that is going around the city. She went in a second time to no results. Then she was put under oxygen mask at the emergency room for pneumonia.

I can go on, but I am sure you know your share of stories.
