Oregon has state-controlled liquor stores. It IS dumb. California doesn't have that.

My guess: an unhealthy marriage of the Puritanical streak that drove the national debate during Prohibition, with the Authoritarian impulse toward Big Government controlling everything.

A most unholy alliance, because it produces 'Big Daddy Government'.
