Yes, LBJ was right. You gotta have the votes.

And it is all well and good to urge the Democrats to start by winning Senate races in a whole host of states in 2006.

But you also have to have the votes to win those Senate races. And, in order to do that, you have to be on the side of mainstream public opinion.

Right now, it is clear that with the exception of the large cities in the most populous states, the policies of the Democratic party are losers. On economic issues, education, minority rights and quotas, and pacifist foreign policy, the party has moved away from the average voter.

When Bush's second term is over in 2009, the Republican party will have held the White House for 20 of the previous 28 years. And it is worth noting, that except for the egregious error of raising taxes after his "read my lips" pledge by Bush Sr, it may very well have been 28 straight.
