Good analysis. I think what's missing from this discussion is the steadily increasing transition to HD transmission by both DBS & cable. One of the big issues confronting TiVo & its relationship w/DirecTV is the introduction by DTV of HD transmissions in MPEG4 format, requiring a change out of existing DTV HD receivers . . . & HD PVRs (1) in local markets where DTV will be introducing local feeds in HD & (2) across all markets where DTV will introduce onto to its subscription HD package new HD programming such as the new release today by Fox regarding bowing of Fox Sports HD & NGC HD channels in 2006.

DTV has recently intro'd NDC PVRs, which I presume will offer TiVo PVR service at the outset, but transition to an NDS PVR service when it's ready for "prime time." More importantly, & IMHO relevant to TiVo's future release with DTV, is DTV's intro of its own (NDS) HD PVR in early 2006. DTV HD subs who "live by" their present HD PVR with TiVo, will more than likely eventually dump their MPEG2 TiVo machine in favor of the NDS MPEG4 compatible machine, particularly if their in markets outside of LA & NY, & particularly if they crave more HD programming. Bottom line, if TiVo's relationship w/DTV is going to continue beyond the existing 2007 contract date, it is going to have to release its own MPEG4 compatible HD DVR for DTV HD customers. If it doesn't, then IMHO, it's only a matter of time b4 TiVo's relationship w/DTV is completely severed.
