I don't agree ST. We used to have twice the number of nukes we have now. Through long, hard effort by both Republican and Democrat administrations we halved them, between ourselves and Russia. Since the chimp, the whole effort has been back burnered or even reversed. We need to start again, and involve all players. Only if we and the Russians are reducing our massive overkill will we have any moral clout with the newer nuclear states or states to be. South Africa is a model of success here.

Why? It is not as if any nuclear power gives a hoot about their obligations under NPT. Even U.S, with all the nukes it already has feels the "need" to have "better" ones.

I haven't heard anything about France or England abrogating their responsibilities under the NPT. ... I also think it would be nice if the US dropped it's development program for a new nuke. Seems stupid to tell others to not develop nukes, when we're developing new ones.

Perhaps we'll have more lasting peace on earth if nukes were as widely spread as public schools.

Global MAD. Only works if all parties want to survive.
