It will all become clear when Fitzgerald comes clean. Until then, all is finally, speculation. Some of it informed; much not.

My own guess, fwiw, is that the case will be more about the coverup than the original dead of trying to take out a critic by ruining his wife's career.

But none of us actually knows.

Incidentally, the Stevenson piece was labeled "memo." Clearly meant to be a flag that it was this reporter's analysis.
