I don't understand how that can be happening John. From what I understand, most of the public library funding comes from local property taxes, and property taxes are going through the roof due to the real estate spike.

Actually, real estate taxes don't necessarily go up as a result of the bubble. Just the evaluations of property changes but the amount doesn't necessarily follow. (The multiplier or divisor, take your pick, I forget the technical term, is adjusted accordingly.) At least it hasn't around here. Property taxes have gone up because expenses have gone up and that's largely health care costs and police salaries. The police in Jersey have a very sweet deal in which starting salaries are well in to the upper 60s, routine pay is in the 90s, and it's not at all unusual for officers to receive well over 100k annually.

With those kinds of salary increases and health care cost increases, it's terribly difficult to find funding for other matters. Salaries, for instance, for boro employees (with the exception of the police) are abysmal.

mike can you give us an update on how Italy sees the subway bombings in London? do they feel their country is next or do they feel this is an England problem only.
