Bush and the neo-cons are NOT conservatives but rather very much the opposite, that is to say, they are probably the most radical group of men who have held power in Washington since the days of Reconstruction. They are not conserving anything --- not our laws, not the lives of our young men, not our traditions of limited government, not our finances, not our long tradition of mutually beneficial relations with the important governments and peoples of Europe, not even the truth, which they view with contempt when it stands in their way, and NOT EVEN our independence as a sovereign government.

I have to agree with you, but my dilemma is that they don't know that. I'm not comfortable that "radical" does them justice. "Irrational radicals" is better. "Fascists" is a pretty good word, but it's so overused, it's misinterpreted as a generic insult.

I think you'll have to rename your beliefs. Bush has relabeled conservatism, and owns the term now. In the distant past, you even had liberal Republicans (which sounds like an oxymoron, and may be one now), like Nelson Rockefeller.

None of the issues you mention matter if you have enough money and connections.

Back in 1970, The Last Poets were ahead of their time with an album that predated "Rap Music", containing the excerpt:

When the revolution comes
some of us will catch it on TV
with chicken hanging from our mouths
you'll know it's revolution
because there won't be no commercials

That was 9/11. The stupefying news of that day was not interrupted by commercials, and 9/11 was the singular event that has enabled the opportunistic, and in fact revolutionary, power grab by Bush, Cheney, Rove, and the rest.
