Speaking of libraries, from the University of Southern Connecticut library via the local Monroe Library I got a copy of "Islands in the Click Stream" by Richard Thieme. It's a series of quite interesting essays on technology transforming society transforming technology.

Don't know that book. How about a quick squib on the author and a bit longer squib on the argument.

If the relations between technology and social change interest you, you might take a careful look at John Gray's review of Friedman's "flat" book. The one I just posted from the NY Review of Books.

Gray considers Friedman a technological determinist, a label which, apparently, Friedman doesn't disagree with (damn preposition just keeps creeping to the end of sentences.) Gray is a thoughtful old line conservative political theorist, not a neo con, one who starts with a secular version of original sin.

Thomas, that looks like an interesting book. It's now on my Amazon "wish list," which is how I keep track of books I want to take a look at (but not necessarily buy).

I was not aware of print.google.com before clicking the link in your post. Interesting service. They are making a lot of effort to stay on the cutting edge of information service on the web.
