That's the truth, CB. All anyone has to do is look at the procurement requirements the Feds put on the Contractors that are to produce the good or service. The profit margins on many things (Defense equipment for instance) is so low, that many of the companies who were in business in the 1960's-70's, are now either merged, or out of business altogether.

No one wins without competition. With no profit, or very, very little profit, why should any company try to compete for the business?

The other problem is redundant system requirements. If one elevator is needed, we need 3 or 4 in case one fails. Plus spares for all of them....

The cost that most people want to ignore, is labor cost, and benefit cost. Unions want "sky's the limit" wages and benefits, but who complains the most about the cost of the product????
