The flaw in your argument is that you assume we can trust the U.S. government to retaliate against our actual adversaries.

There is absolutely no basis in fact for that assumption. In fact, the evidence to date indicates that the U.S. would respond based on justifications that have absolutely nothing to do with the attack against us.

Extreme to you, idiotic to me, but the very attitude you espouse, is excellent reasoning for other countries to want nuclear weaponry and probably the very reason China and Russia are planning a joint military operation.
