Politically it doesnt pay for her to be one of the many left wing candidates in 2008. Even if she were to win that battle, it would make her less palatable in the presidential election itself. Her interest is best served if the most left candidate appears headed for the nomination when Hillary steps on the gas and trys to coopt his support and derail the candicacy. Actually thats what kerry did to dean but then failed to stay the moderate course.
Who knows what any pol believes in their heart of hearts. They are all ambitious sobs and dobs and thats ok with me because at times we need ruthlessness in the WH. I think Hillary can run a bit left on social issues that resonate--actaully she may be the one to reform SS and tackle health care albeit differently than she proposed in the early bill years. But on FP and terror she needs to be as tough on nails. If i learned nothing else from the last election and the events in London, its that folks can say they hate bush/blair but in the end if the WOT is on the front burner they aint gonna elect a leftist who appears weak and vacillating. Also think Hillary is seriously looking for middle ground on the abortion battles that can get 60-70% support from both lifers and choicers. Something like banning late term abortions, having family notification--both with some exceptions when the mothers life is in danger in #1 and when the parents are neanderthals as in #2. Add to that the conservative pro-stem cell position that allows the use of embryos on the way to the dump and you have the makings of a popular social policy that will be anathema to pure lifers and the kate michelmans of the world but acceptable to most americans. In a milieu like that the SC wont have to deal with Rowe and just rule on the edges. mike

Drudge is reporting that Senator Clinton intends to support John Roberts' nomination to the Supreme Court. As Michael Corleone would say, "It's the smart move."

Hillary has a fantastic advantage in being the only Dem who does not have to cater to the looney left base on a daily basis. They believe that she is really theirs at heart, so all is forgiven. I think this advantage will carry her straight to the nomination.
