>>He connected to Bush and not to Kerry, what we hippies used to call "vibes">>

OT: I wouldn't romanticise the relationship. Bush offered protection like the Mafia. Most Americans are scared so they voted for Bush, not realizing that government cannot perform that function.

What can you do? I gave up on my redneck buddies - they are far too reactive to macro issues than proactive - the only economic education they received was home economics - hehe - they will always be sheeple led by a shepherd - and if that shepherd is a wolf they have had it. If he is a saint they will be rewarded - but they follow always.

From the pkarchive.org folks regarding canada's healthcare subsidy to employers:

Recent work by George Lakoff (see Rockridge Institute www.rockridgeinstitute.org)has shown that how one votes is often more affected by your value system than by economic issues. Part of the "value system" for Republicans these days is the belief that workers should have to compete in the marketplace to procure any benefits (buying their own health insurance and even their own education) instead of trying to "burden" either government or the business community with these costs. The Democrats have been notably silent while this has happened.

It is my contention that not only are health care and education proper areas of government spending but that it is vital to our national security that they be fully funded by the government. I would also include achieving energy independence by investing in alternative energy, rebuilding the nation's infrastructure, addressing global warming and enlightened immigration reform as vital to our national security. There are also great economic arguments for government support of these issues.

When I say these are vital to our national security I mean if we want to maintain our standard of living we have to take these issues very seriously. We, as a country, are far better off if we create a national health care system that views healthy citizens as a vital requirement for a successful economy. The same goes for education which should be free and very high quality through college.
