Family of Israel's Chief Rabbi Arrested
News; Posted on: 2005-05-08 18:56:43

Wife, daughter and son charged with kidnapping and assault, while dad enjoys 'kid gloves' treatment.

ISRAELI POLICE HAVE ARRESTED the family of Shlomo Amar (pictured), Israel’s chief Sephardic rabbi, for their roles in the kidnapping and assault of a 17-year-old boy who was caught dating the rabbi's daughter. (Dating goes against strict religious prohibitions limiting contact between single members of the opposite sex.)

According to Israeli news reports, Amar's wife, Mazal; and their 31-year-old son, Meir, decided to take action against the boy. 18-year-old Ayala Amar also participated, by luring her hapless boyfriend to a specified location.

The Amars grabbed the youth at knifepoint and drove him to a house in the Arab village of Kalansua, where he was beaten for several hours. They also cut off his side locks and ripped the yarmulke from his head. The victim reported that he was then taken to the Amars’ home, where the beatings continued, allegedly under the supervision of the chief rabbi.

Although the youth specifically implicated the chief rabbi in his statements to police, the rabbi has not been arrested.
