Possibly - but consider that their eventual aim to control some number of countries or territories is possible in the Muslim world and impossible outside of it. Why attack something that is not your objective unless you expect the result to have some impact on achieving your objective? The idea that Al Qaeda works out of blind hate for our values doesn't make sense or correspond to most of their stated rationale for their actions. Do you think they are lying about wanting the US out of the Middle Wast and really want to destroy the infidel superpower West instead? Seems more likely to me the other way around.
