Yeah, it is horrible. They are the invisible victims of the so-called economic miracle in China. Some western educated Chinese elites have been openly advocated that in order to modernize China, 35 millions or so Chinese would have to sacrifice (or maybe "crucify" is a more appropriate word) themselves. Now you see the hard fact supporting that these elites have got what they want.

That said, since Wen JiaBao came into power, the Chinese gov. has put a lot of effort on shrinking the gap bet. the rich and poor. But it takes time and resource, since there are already plenty of powerful special interest groups formed in China's politics.
