I wouldn't call generals cowards just because they aren't on battlefields in their 60's. Osama, and many of his bretheren, were in the battles in Afghanistan. Now they are old generals. Whatever your "army", whether it's the US military, or the Islamic Jihadis (who of course see themselves as an army) it's almost always the young men who do most of the dying.

middle age was a lot younger in roman times

and

sending someone into battle is different than sending someone to blow themselves up

in battle you have a chance of surviving and the hope of surviving

suicide bombers detonate themselves [and others] into sure death
