I read a fascinating book in which the author pointed out how the liberal press fauns over liberal Republicans. The fact is that one has to be very smart to be a conservative. If a politician is a liberal Republican, the press calls them: maverick; independent; independent minded; thoughtful; wise; respected; above the partisan flap; "when ______ speaks, people listen"; "arbitrator of partisan vitriol"; "he speaks his mind"; "walks the political Middle Way"; "he helps civilize politics"; etc.

If you are conservative you: "pandering to special interests";http://www.cnn.com/2005/POLITICS/07/26/defense.bill.ap/index.html
"not prone to confessing mistakes;
"committed a whopper";
"Republicans are stunned";

The liberal media uses adjectives to convey the understanding that Republicans are mean, unbending, etc. and that RINOs are smart handsome, clever, independent etc.

McCain plays to the media. If he is not a shameless RINO, then he has no one to blame for the perception but himself. If you asked me to choose between McCain and Hillary, it would be the RINO over the socialist.
